The importance of setting

When Jami Davenport, Cristal Ryder and myself set out to write the anthology Public Displays of Eroticism, we chose to set our stories--at least partially--in a park. We did that for a number of reasons:

1- A park has many potential settings within it, especially since we had nature trails, scenic overlooks next to a lake, etc.

2- A park is out in the open, but not as much as, say, a mall or some other public building.

3- A park offers the opportunity for a lot of different types of people to be around.

There were other reasons, but those were some of the main ones. In the stories, we used lean-to's, benches, those scenic overlooks, and a bunch of other parts of the park. It wasn't like all our couples were getting it on in a car or something similar--they could express their individual personalities and desires by where in the park they chose to have their display of eroticism.

Our stories feature new couples, more established couples, younger couples, and somewhat older couples. All of them have their own reasons for wanting to be in the great outdoors, and the setting works for all of them.

Setting is an integral part of any story, but when you're doing related stories about exhibitionism and voyeurism, the setting takes on even more meaning. We talk about the people getting dirt on their hands, looking around trees, stumbling on rocky paths--all things relating to the setting. Sure, we could've written a hot anthology and used a different setting, but this one worked for us.

EXCERPT FROM BACK TO NATURE

We make the short drive to the lake and park the car. Dmitri takes my hand as we stroll around the perimeter.
He soon pulls me out onto one of many scenic points overlooking the lake, and places me in front of him so we’re both facing the pristine, peaceful view. His erection nestles into my bottom as his hands steal underneath my shirt, kneading my breasts. Dmitri pulls the shirt up to expose me and I dart a quick glance around, wondering if the hikers at the other overlooks around the lake can see me. I lean my head back on his shoulder like I know he wants me to as he pinches and tweaks my nipples.
Turning me around, he grabs me and lifts me to his pelvis briefly before setting me back on my feet. He leans down and re-wets the front of my shirt as he sucks on my nipples again. I moan, grabbing Dmitri’s head. A twig snaps and I look around him to see another couple about fifty feet away. They avert their eyes and walk past the overlook. As the exhibitionist in me comes alive, I grin and Dmitri’s head moves to my other breast.
